We believe: - The weakening of marriage is one of the most serious problems facing our community.
- Children raised outside of intact marriages are significantly more likely than other children to drop out of school, to commit crimes, to suffer from depression and to divorce when they get married.
- Men and women who divorce have shorter life spans, and more illness and disability than those who remain married. They are more likely to have problems with alcohol and financial stability.
- The decline in marriage cost taxpayers millions of dollars in more jails, welfare payments, medical costs, and court costs.
Therefore We Will: - Encourage 8-12 hours of premarital training using appropriate tools, inventories and mentoring to prepare couples for marriage.
- Provide or support marriage enrichment opportunities and resources for young families, stepfamilies and other families in need.
- Encourage or provide support and reconciliation mechanisms for couples in troubled marriages and spouses who are separated.
- Encourage a waiting period and a remarriage preparation process for couples considering remarriage after a divorce.
- Provide or support educational opportunities for our youth on the significance and value of marriage and teach them the skills necessary for a successful marriage.
I personally commit to the pursuit these goals. I will pursue their further endorsement and incorporation by community organizations with which I am associated. |
